How to: Format numbers as text.
Solution:
Type an apostrophe (') before numbers or select 'Cells...' from the 'Format' menu.
Do one of the following:
1) To type numbers as text quickly, type an apostrophe (') before numbers.
2) Use the 'Cells...' command in the 'Format' menu.
NOTE: Complete the following steps before entering the numbers to allow this method to be effective.
a) Select the cells to format.
b) Select the 'Format' menu and select 'Cells...'. (The Format Cells dialog box appears.)
c) Click the 'Number' tab.
d) Select 'Text' from the 'Category' list box.
e) Click 'OK'.
